Beyond child care and moral upbringing, parents have great roles to play in the educational
development of a child. Apart from providing the most intensive medium for a child’s nurturing and protection, they have intricate help to render in a child’s educational upbringing.
Aside offering love, appreciation, acceptance, guidance and encouragement to their child as
they grow physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially, their impact on their children
education matters a lot.
Their disposition towards their child’s education can determine how well the child will
perform in his/her educational journey.
Research also shows that when parents are actively involved in their children’s education,
children are more engaged with their school works, stay in school longer and acquire better
learning results.
Below are some of the intricate roles of parents in the educational development of a child.
- Involvement in child’s academic performance: Following up on academic performance, parents are also to check their child’s school learning materials such as notebooks, textbooks, ruler, pencil, etc. when they are back from school so as to discover if any of them is not in good condition and make the appropriate correction. They are to go through their notebooks and guide them in doing the given assignments. Via this, they discover where the child needs improvement and provide the necessary assistance.
- Purchase/Provision of school materials: Parents are to purchase/provide the necessary materials needed by their child in his/her educational pursuit. These materials include but are not limited to notebooks, textbooks, uniforms, socks, pens, pencils.
- Payment of school fees: Parents are to ensure they consistently pay their child’s school fees on a timely basis. They’re not to neglect prompt payment of the child’s school fees and other relevant dues.
- Attendance of Parent-Teacher Meetings: Parents are to attend Parent-Teacher-Association meetings so that they can keep up on updates of their child’s school’s situation and also get to meet the children’s teachers to check performance at school.
- Providing home learning assistance: Parents are to provide home learning assistance for their child at home. They are to prevent their child from roaming about after school hours, weekends and holidays by keeping them engaged with educational works. This can be done by teaching them different topics in the subjects being offered and giving exercises after the teachings or employing a home tutor to help through the learning process or watch children appropriate educative program or YouTube educational channels. With this, a better academic performance is achieved.
- Advising and monitoring: Parents are to give their child good advices related to education. They are to encourage them to stay away from examination malpractices and face their studies. They are to encourage their child to shun evil association and face their academics squarely. They are to encourage their child to love and pay attention to the teachers and make good use of the school’s library and learning periods for a well enhanced academic performance and better career becoming.
